I am always amazed by something in South Africa – and I don’t necessarily mean that in a positive way! It is the inefficiency (job creation they call it) that I am just not used to anymore.

At the airport, they have one long queue that splits into various counters … the most efficient way of moving a queue along you might think. But then there is the South African version of these queues: Someone (an employee) stands at the front of the queue, directing queuers to make mini queues (about 5 deep) at each counter. So you get no benefit at all from the single queue!

Also, you have parking pay-stations inside shopping centres / at airports etc. So you’d expect to just enter your paid ticket into the barrier at the exit. However, when you get to the exit, there is someone employed to either take your ticket … or to insert your ticket into the barrier for you!
